Pench Tiger Reserve and its surroundings form the true setting of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The character of Mowgli was inspired by Sir William Henry Sleeman’s 1831 pamphlet An Account of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their Dens, which reported a child raised by wolves near the village of Satbavadi in Seoni. Many locations described in the tale, like the Vainganga River, the valley where Sher Khan was killed, and the ranges around Kannivara and Seoni, exist in reality.
The forests of Pench boast a rich cultural and natural history, praised in texts such as Ain-i-Akbari, R.A. Strenthal’s Seoni: Camp Life in the Satpura, James Forsyth’s Highlands of Central India, and A.A. Dunbar Brander’s Wild Animals of Central India. Celebrated for its biodiversity and heritage, Pench Tiger Reserve was honored with the “Best Maintained Tourist-Friendly National Park” award under the National Tourism Prize 2006–07.
Pench National Park is rich in flora and fauna, with dry mixed forests, teak groves, and riverbank species like arjuna, jamun, and guular. Scattered mahua, palash, and plum trees add beauty, while bamboo and 82 grass species thrive across the landscape. The park is home to majestic tigers, leopards, wild dogs, jackals, and hyenas, along with over 300 bird species, reptiles, and insects, making it a vibrant haven of biodiversity.
Located in Central India, Pench experiences a tropical climate with extreme variations. January may bring sub-zero temperatures and frost, while the monsoon usually sets in by mid-June. The average monthly temperatures are as follows:
